The question of who God is has been asked by many people throughout history. Some have tried to answer it by using human reason, philosophy, or science. But the only reliable source of information about God is the Bible, which is God's inspired and authoritative word. The Bible reveals to us who God is, what he has done, and what he wants from us.

God is the Creator and Sustainer of all things

The Bible begins with the statement: "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1). This tells us that God is the source of everything that exists. He made everything out of nothing, by his powerful word. He also sustains everything by his providence and care. He is not part of his creation but transcends it. He is not limited by time, space, or matter. He is eternal, infinite, and unchangeable.

God is One in three Persons

The Bible also teaches that God is not a solitary being, but a Trinity of Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. These three Persons are distinct from each other but share the same divine nature and essence. They are co-equal and co-eternal. They relate to each other in perfect love and harmony. They also work together in creation, redemption, and sanctification.

The Father is the first Person of the Trinity. He is the source of all things, the head of the Son and the Spirit, and the sovereign ruler of the universe. He loves the world and sent his Son to save it (John 3:16).

The Son is the second Person of the Trinity. He is the eternal Word of God, who became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14). He is fully God and fully man, one person with two natures. He lived a sinless life, died on the cross for our sins, rose from the dead, ascended to heaven, and will come again to judge the living and the dead. He is the Savior and Lord of all who believe in him (Acts 4:12).

The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity. He is the breath of God, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. He is the giver of life, the teacher of truth, and the helper of believers. He convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8). He regenerates, indwells, seals, fills, guides, gifts, empowers, and sanctifies those who belong to Christ (John 3:5; Romans 8:9; Ephesians 1:13; 5:18; 1 Corinthians 12:4-11; Acts 1:8; 1 Peter 1:2).

God is holy, loving, and perfect

The Bible also reveals to us some of the attributes or characteristics of God. These attributes are not separate from his being but are expressions of his nature. They are not contradictory or incompatible with each other but are harmonious and complementary.

One of the most important attributes of God is his holiness. Holiness means that God is separate from sin and evil and that he hates anything that opposes his will and glory. Holiness also means that God is pure and perfect in all his ways. He is righteous and just in all his actions. He always does what is right and good.

Another important attribute of God is his love. Love means that God cares for his creatures and desires their well-being. Love also means that God gives himself for others, even at great cost to himself. He demonstrated his love for us by sending his Son to die for our sins (Romans 5:8). He also shows his love for us by forgiving us when we repent (1 John 1:9), by providing for our needs (Philippians 4:19), by protecting us from harm (Psalm 121:7), by comforting us in trouble (2 Corinthians 1:3-4), by listening to our prayers (Psalm 65:2), by giving us his Spirit (Luke 11:13), by transforming us into his image (2 Corinthians 3:18), by preparing a place for us in heaven (John 14:2-3), and by promising to be with us always (Matthew 28:20).

Other attributes of God include his wisdom, power, faithfulness, goodness, grace, mercy, patience, sovereignty, and immutability. These attributes show us that God knows everything, can do anything, keeps his promises, is kind and generous, forgives undeservedly, endures long-sufferingly, rules over all, and never changes.

Conclusion

God is the Creator and Sustainer of all things, the One in three Persons, the holy, loving, and perfect Being, and the One who wants us to know him, love him, and serve him. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last. He is the King of kings and Lord of lords. He is the Father of lights, the Son of Man, and the Spirit of truth. He is the Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace. He is the Great I AM.

He is God.
